Heat Output: How to Choose a Wood-burning Stove The first thing you need to consider when purchasing a wood-burning (or multi-fuel) stove is heat output vs. the size and type of room you wish to heat. Most manufacturers quote a range of heat outputs, i.e. a 5 kW appliance will be quoted "range 2 - 7kW ", this is due to the 'intermittent' nature of the stove's operation.
